Michigan has just joined a short list of states by\u00a0approving digital license plates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nstate\u2019s legislature passed a law Thursday allowing the plates, which are high-tech\nalternative to their metal counterparts. They are digital screens mounted onto\na frame that in many ways resemble the traditional car license plates. The\nplates are actually wireless LTE devices and come with wireless communications\nsystems and computer chips that make it easier to update them with new\nregistration tags. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

They\nconstantly show the license plate number and have the ability to display personalized\nmessages or alerts such as \u201cinvalid\u201d and \u201cstolen\u201d that could be useful for law\nenforcement; they could also make it easier to digitally renew license plates\nover the years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Michigan is the third state to approve digital plates as California and Arizona have already approved their use, and Florida<\/a> and Texas lined up for later in the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The plates are\nexclusively made by a company called Reviver Auto, and cost $499 for a basic\nversion, RPlate Essential. A premium version, the Rplate Pro, come with a GPS\nnavigation that allows for geo-fencing runs $799. They allow a manager to get\nan alert if a worker drives a company vehicle outside the service area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Getting one of the\ndigital license plates not only costs a lot, but there is also a monthly\nsubscription fee of $7, plus any installation costs. You cannot buy the license\nplates from any of the states\u2019 Department of Motor Vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
