CEO Elon Musk showed off more details on the new Raptor engine that SpaceX<\/a> hopes will power their Starship Super Heavy rocket system to Mars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shortly after the\nfirst operationalized Raptor had been shipped to McGregor, Texas  for its first\nfull-scale static fire tests, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk posted the first official\nphotos of the \u201cradically redesigned\u201d engine preparing for its critical debut\ntest fire in Texas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The tweet that releases\nthe new pictures of the Raptor also indicates that SpaceX is ready to begin\ntesting the engine at its McGregor facility. However, when these tests will\ntake place or what they will be testing is unclear at the moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Designed with\nextreme reliability, efficiency, and reusability in mind, the Raptor engine is\nthe successor of the Merlin engine that is the essential component of\nthe Starship Super Heavy, a massive passenger spacecraft that Elon Musk\nhopes will not only bring humans to Mars but bring them back as well, exciting\nthe public to the possibilities of space exploration and hopefully kicking off\na new age of space exploration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reason why the Raptor is critical to the success of the Starship Super Heavy, which will ferry people and materials between Earth and Mars, is that it will\u00a0be fueled\u00a0by a mix of Oxygen and Methane. These two elements can be\u00a0sourced\u00a0locally on Mars, and will allow the spacecraft to refuel for the return trip to Earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
