The City and County of Denver is the capital and the most populous city of the U.S. state of Colorado. Denver is a consolidated city-county, located in the South Platte River Valley on the western edge of the High Plains just east of the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. The Denver downtown district is located immediately east of the confluence of Cherry Creek with the South Platte River, approximately 12 miles east of the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Denver is nicknamed the "Mile-High City" because its official elevation is exactly one mile above sea level. The Colorado Convention Center (CCC) is a multi-purpose meeting facility centrally located in downtown Denver, Colorado. Within blocks of the Colorado State Capitol, it is among the landmarks of Denver. The Colorado Convention Center is located between 14th Street and Speer Boulevard, and between Champa Street and Welton Street. Stout Street runs underneath the building, as does the Light Rail`s Central Corridor. The Colorado Convention Center is central to many other downtown attractions including: the 16th Street Mall, the Denver Pavilions, the LoDo (Lower Downtown) district, the Pepsi Center - home of the Colorado Avalanche, Denver Nuggets, Colorado Crush and the Colorado Mammoth, Coors Field - home of the Colorado Rockies, Denver`s Downtown Aquarium, Elitch Gardens amusement park, and the Denver Botanic Gardens.
