Vatican withdraws misspelled medals

The Vatican recalled a series of commemorative medals after it was discovered that Jesus’s name had been misspelled as “Lesus” Around 6,000 of the gold, silver and bronzed medals, featuring the Pope’s motto on his coat of arms, were created by the Italian State Mint.

What seems to be just a typo for some people could be taken for blasphemy by others. The medals had to be a call for celebration, now they could easily become a cause for scandal. The most interesting fact is that at least four pieces were sold before anyone even noticed the mistake. Imagine all the hand they’ve gone through, catholic hand, and no one saw “LESUS”. That would definitely have someone fired.

Fortunately many people on the Internet already made all this a joke. “What would Lesus do?” and “Why God invented spell-check?” are just some recent tweets. Another interesting side of the story is that collector are already predicting that the sold medals’ prize will jump really high as they are unique. So the question is: If you managed to get one of those medals, are you cursed or really, really lucky?

Are we ready for self-driving cars?

selfdrivingSelf-driving cars used to be just an element of science fiction shows. Nowadays more and more automobile manufacturers experiment on vehicles that can move around safely while the driver is finishing his morning coffee or lunch. Google, GM and Nissan have their experimental models and driverless cars are expected on the road by the end of the decade. That is raising more and more questions on road regulations an insurance rules. All our rules about driving — from who pays for a speeding ticket to who is liable for a crash — are based on having a human behind the wheel. Who should be hold responsible if an autonomous vehicle is involved in a car accident? Every driver knows that even something as minor as a bended fender could be the cause of serious troubles.

So far, only three U.S. states — California, Florida and Nevada — plus the District of Columbia have laws or rules spelling out how autonomous vehicles may be used on their roads. But even there the rules only work for testing the technology and a licensed drive is required behind the wheel. So far the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) does not approve authorization of self-driving vehicles for purposes other than testing. But as self-driving cars become more common, there will be a flood of new legal questions needing answers and soon.

The signing ceremony for California’s self-driving-car, law, earlier this year showed that regulatory organs are not ready to answer these questions. When asked who is responsible when a driverless car runs a red light, Governor Jerry Brown answered “I don’t know — whoever owns the car, I would think. But we will work that out.”

„We will work that out” may not be good enough. But it’s a start. Self-driving cars should be legal — and they are likely to start showing up faster and in greater numbers than people expect.

Tesla shares sinking after a Model S caught fire near Seattle

tesla fire1A video uploaded to the Jalopnik website resulted Tesla’s stock to fall $12.05 to $180.95 — the stock’s biggest one-day decline since July 16. The video shows a Model S on fire. The incident happened Tuesday morning on State Route 167. According to the driver, he had struck some metal debris on the freeway so he exited. Shortly after that, he says, he began to smell something burning and then the fire started.

From Tesla commented shortly after the incident that the flames were contained to the front of the $70,000 vehicle due to its design and construction. Company spokeswoman Liz Jarvis-Shean said the fire was caused by “substantial damage” to the car when the driver hit a large metal object in the road. But a trooper who responded to the scene was unable to locate any objects on the roadway and the car was too damaged from the fire to show the exact reason for the inflammation.tesla fore2

We remind you that the Model S got top crash-test score from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and a tie for the highest auto test score ever recorded by Consumer Reports magazine. That was essential for the Palo Alto – based company’s shares to rise more than 400% for less than a year. But investors likely were alarmed, with some selling their shares, out of fear that the fire could be an indication of a flaw in the company’s battery packs.

Under normal circumstances, investigators from NHTSA, the government’s auto safety watchdog, would travel to Seattle to investigate the Tesla crash. With the partial government shutdown and it is unclear when or if an investigation would begin. A lengthy examination should follow, though, and this could be a make or break issue for the company if the vehicle is found to be at fault. Remember, there’s no gasoline involved here and lithium-ion batteries already have a reputation for running hot and catching fire. Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner was grounded soon after its inaugural flights earlier this year because of electrical fires traced to the plane’s lithium-ion batteries.

Attention-Powered Car Invented by Australian Researchers

brain-poweredInattention is one of the major killers on our roads – it’s responsible for as many road deaths as drink driving and speeding combined. A team of Australian researchers think they have a solution for that. They have developed a new weapon against deadly fatigue and distraction behind the wheel: a car powered by driver attentiveness. The world’s first ‘brain-powered’ car uses a headset to monitor brain activity and slow acceleration during periods of distraction.

The Royal Automobile Club WA (RAC), in conjunction with specialist research firm, has unveiled a headset device which communicates directly with a car’s engine. Essentially, if the driver’s level of attention drops – through fatigue or a distraction, for example – the car eases off the accelerator to safely slow down, alerting them to their lapse in concentration. Dr Geoffrey Mackellar, chief technical officer at Emotiv, commented: ‘We can’t read thoughts, but we can figure out to a fair approximation what’s going on in the brain, in general terms.

The software is being hailed as a breakthrough for smart phone distractions, general fatigue and driver drowsiness. A leading road safety expert described the device as “a step in the right direction” in the fight against driver inattentiveness, which is attributed as a factor in up to 46 per cent of fatal crashes nationally.

“The sooner we get this technology into cars, the better it will be. We’ve always got to inform drivers what their state of mind is and how safe they’re driving. Anything we can feed back to the driver – so long as it’s not distractive – has got to be beneficial.” Says  RAC general manager Pat Walker.

Intelligent Highways are the future in safe driving

smart highway“When we look at highways, why is so much money and time and energy spent on cars but the actual roads themselves are still stuck in the Middle Ages?” asks Dutch designer Daan Roosegaarde. He is the one who comes up with the idea of creating roads that help drivers. One of Europe’s largest engineers and road manufactures – Heijman takes Roosegaarede’s idea at heart and the firs 150-meter stretch „smart” road will appear in the Netherland by the end of the year.

The collaboration between Roosegaarde and Heijmans is a true example of innovative industries. The design and interactivity from Studio Roosegaarde and the craftsmanship of Heijmans are fused into one common goal: innovation of the Dutch landscape. The new road technology includes charging electric cars passing over, painting temporary digital snowflakes over ice patches, illuminating priority lanes and reducing energy waste by using streetlights donned with sensors.

“These are all ideas which are not super high-tech, they are basic principles which we can implement to existing roads,” Roosegaarde said in a video, which highlights his nomination for the INDEX “Designs to Improve Life” award. His project won the award eventually and the 100,000-euro reward is to be injected into the project’s continued development.

Ever the designer, Roosegaarde is already brainstorming new ideas, including applying some of these same technologies to illuminate bicycle lanes or airport landing tracks.

One day, he might even try to use the bioluminescence of jellyfish and fireflies to illuminate roadside shrubbery, an effort to once-and-for-all get rid of light poles.

Safety – celebrities and their armored vehicles

dartz-prombron-iron-diamond-l4p-ladies-only-suv_100348257_lWhen it comes to security some celebrities tend to overreact. At least in the eyes of the middle class citizen spending $1 million a year for securing your home seems a little over the top. But that is exactly the case for some of our favorite famous families, like Brad Pit and Angelina Jolie, says Aaron Cohen, director of IMS Security in Hollywood, whose clients have included Katy Perry, Kate Moss and Charlie Sheen. So it’s inevitable that celebrities would want to expand their security periphery putting an armored car in their garages.

Texas Armoring executive vice president Jason Forston says the company has seen demands in the U.S. soar the past five years. “A large part of it is celebrities, pro athletes and rock stars,” Forston says. “You even have a lot of Hollywood executives, studio heads and people not in the spotlight.” Forston credits the “climate of fear right now — the growing gap between the haves and the have-nots” — for the surge in sales. Texas Armoring strips a vehicle to the frame and installs countermeasures like electrified door handles that deliver nonlethal shocks to carjackers and overzealous paparazzi. The finished cars take two to three months to convert at a cost of as much as $100,000 and are virtually indistinguishable from unarmored vehicles.

Whatever the reason is, it is obvious that armored vehicles are getting more and more popular in Hollywood. And car manufacturers are ready to take care of their needs. One of the most extreme examples is the Prombron Iron Diamond made by Latvia’s Dartz Motorz, the same company that built Sacha Baron Cohen’s gold-plated presidential SUV featured in The Dictator. The Iron Diamond (on the picture) is said to be „a girly looking military tank”

Kanye West recently ordered two Iron Diamonds at a staggering cost of $1.2million (£750,000) each, car website Jalopnik reported. It’s not only specialist manufacturers who are meeting the demand. Bentley, BMW and Mercedes, among others, all quietly make armored versions of their upmarket vehicles. The BMW 7 Series High Security can withstand armor-piercing bullets and is outfitted with run-flat tires and a sealed ventilation system in case of attack by chemical weapon.
