Pop star arrested for attacking limo driver

Having a limo picking you up after a party is a luxury. Your chauffeur is the person who will take you home or to your hotel safely and unlike a cab driver will open the door for you and will be polite no matter the state you are in. But some do not understand how much they actually depend on the chauffeurs and treat them disrespectfully. Young pop star Justin Beiber is accused to be one of these people.

Justin-Bieber-Arrested-Miami-BeachJustin Bieber has been charged with assault for allegedly hitting a Toronto limousine driver several times in the back of the head last month, the second arrest in a week for the 19-year-old star. Toronto police said in late December they were looking into allegations that a member of Bieber’s entourage assaulted a limo driver who was ferrying the Canadian pop star and several others. Police said at the time it was unclear whether Bieber was involved. Bieber emerged from a black SUV wearing a winter coat and a backwards ball cap before being led through a throng of police and reporters. Continue reading

Ford goes for the self-driving cars

More and more carmakers look to the future and see cars that drive themselves. Volvo and Nissan made some progress lately – Volvo plans to put 100 cars on the streets of Sweden’s second city and Nissan already tested a self-driving Leaf on a highway south of Tokyo. Nissan (and also Mercedes-Benz) claim they can put autonomous car in sale by 2020. Ford is not so optimistic and says 2025 is more realistic. They just announced their testing vehicle – the new Ford Fusion Hybrid.

ford-fusion

Ford has partnered with the University of Michigan to develop future automated driving and driver-assistance technologies. The blue oval says the project is part of its “Blueprint for Mobility” plan, which aims to develop new technology for use on its cars from 2025 and beyond.

The most interesting feature in the new Fusion is the LiDAR – Light Detection And Ranging – sensor system. This system would be the eyes of a self driving car – placed in four rotating cowls on the roof, that look like police light bar but are actually spinning lasers. The swath of lasers spin and the reflections are picked up by passive sensors in the car. Similar systems are already in use on other autonomous vehicles, but most carmakers prefer optical and millimeter wave radar rather than LiDAR.

Ford says that it is already working on new technologies to alert drivers to traffic jams and accidents, as well as semi-autonomous functions for parking and driving in slow-moving traffic. The company plans to add some autopilot capabilities to its cars in the mid-term, while also looking at fully autonomous driving further ahead.

The Ford Fusion Hybrid automated vehicle represents a vital step toward our vision for the future of mobility,” said Ford Executive Chairman Bill Ford. “We see a future of connected cars that communicate with each other and the world around them to make driving safer, ease traffic congestion and sustain the environment. By doing this, Ford is set to have an even greater impact in our next 100 years than we did in our first 100.”

Power plus luxury – Porsche Panamera Executive

Everyone has dreamed of a super-powerful sports car. But reaching the point when you can actually afford one, you often find yourself in the backseat and realize that comfort is what you really need. With the Executive version of Porsche Panamera you can have both.001-2014-porsche-panamera-executive-qs

The model is stretched by 5.9 inches (15cm), adding more space for the rear passengers. Not that the standard Panamera rear seat isn’t comfortable, but the Executive version gives you the chance to stretch out and feel special. Space is not all you get on the back seat. There is an interior-lighting package and a large center console that Porsche says is designed specifically for the rear compartment. Thermal- and noise-insulated windows with privacy glazing help to keep the chauffeured suitably removed from reality.

porsche-panamera-long-wheelbase-revealed-as-panamera-executive_2It is hard to imagine how someone would buy a Porsche and choose the back seat. The answer is simple – if you are going to be chauffeured around in a car, why not make it a Porsche? And more importantly – the Panamera Executive gives you both options. You can look all important and successful stepping out the back door for a business event. And you can send the chauffeur home, take the wheel and step on the gas.

The Executive have all power extras of the standard Panamera: two turbochargers to the engine to generate 50 extra horsepower, bringing the total to a huge 570 horsepower; the special exhaust system that lets you hear all those horses; the innovative Panamera air suspension, which combines excellent ride comfort and typical Porsche driving properties. Just like the standard issue, stretched Executive edition is good for a top speed of 192 mph (280km/h). It is only down by two-tenths in the quarter-mile, running it in 12 seconds to the standard Turbo S’s 11.8. Using launch control, Porsche claims a 0-to-60-mph time of 3.6 seconds regardless of wheelbase length.

Porsche said it best: “With the new Panamera Executive models, we’ve extended the sports car feel.”

Volvo and Nissan join the autonomous vehicles excitement

A car that can drive itself is the ultimate dream of carmakers these days. Just like electrical cars, a lot of expectations are put upon autonomous vehicles – they are supposed to be safer, greener and more economical. And while the world may not be ready for a driverless car, more and more manufacturers start testing them. Volvo announced plans for putting 100 self driving cars to the streets of Sweden’s second largest city by 2017. Nissan said a self-driving version of its electric Leaf car made its first foray onto public roads.

nissan selfdriveNissan’s autonomous car is based on the electric Leaf. It made a successful run in Japan, on the Sagami Expressway in the Kanagawa prefecture, southwest of Tokyo. The vehicle entered the highway at 40 km/h (25 m/h) and accelerated to a maximum of 80 km/h (50m/h).  The system, called Autonomous Drive, controlled the cars speed and steering while evaluating road conditions and traffic. It merges into traffic, changes lanes and makes adjustments to keep a safe distance from other vehicles. The information comes from cameras, laser guidance and radar. The system learns from driving time, the more it is used the better and safer it becomes.

Nissan vice chairman Toshiyuki Shiga and Yuji Kuroiwa, the Kanagawa prefecture’s governor, were passengers during the car’s test drive. “I feel we are very near to creating fully autonomous drive,” said Shiga. Governor Kuroiwa, who gave the tests the go-ahead, said they were crucial is the car’s development. “This technology is still in its infant stage. It lacks road experience, but by accumulating those experiences, the technology will further evolve,” he said.

volvoMeanwhile in Sweden, Volvo plans on starting a project called “Drive Me — Self-driving cars for sustainable mobility”. It a joint project between Volvo Car Group, the Swedish Transport Administration, the Swedish Transport Agency, Lindholmen Science Park and the City of Gothenberg. The project also earned an endorsement from the Swedish government to put self-driving cars on the road. For the Drive Me project, cars will drive on approximately 50 kilometers, or 30 miles, of select roads in and around Gothenberg. The roads are heavily traveled by commuters and include motorway conditions and traffic. The self-driving vehicles to be used in Drive Me are defined as “highly autonomous cars.” This means the automobile can handle all driving functions the driver requires except for time-to-time scenarios that are a bit trickier. The cars will also be able to self-park without the driver in the car. The first model to launch will be the all-new Volvo XC90, which will be unveiled in 2014.

“We aren’t the world’s biggest country, we aren’t the world’s largest car maker, but we make up for that by being smarter and working together in a simpler way,” said Volvo’s chief executive Haakan Samuelsson.

Autonomous driving requires more testing before becoming a legal and technical possibility in most countries. As we already pointed out, the technology is moving faster than the society is ready to accept it. Car manufacturers are coming closer to autonomous driving by adding automated features through the use of technological innovations such as cameras and computers that can carry out certain actions. Some safety experts have long said our highways would be much safer if cars drove themselves, cutting the chance of human error.

Paul Walker dies in a car accident

Paul-Walker-DeathPaul Walker, 40-years old Hollywood star has died in a car crash north of Los Angeles. Ironically, Walker was best known for his roles in the “Fast and the Furious” action movies – he starred in five of the six films about illegal street racing and heists.

The news was first posted by TMZ. A lot of fans of the actor refused to believe it was true at first. „No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no! Please be a hoax. Please be just another hoax” is just one of the comments on the Internet. The news was later confirmed by multiple sources, including Walker’s publicist, Ame Van Iden. “Sadly, I must confirm that Paul did pass away this afternoon in a car accident,” she said in an email. The statement said Walker had been in the area to attend a charity event for his organization Reach Out Worldwide. “We … are stunned and saddened beyond belief by this news,” the statement said.

Paul was the passenger in a friend’s Porsche GT. The driver of the car lost control, crashing into a light post. The Los Angeles county sheriff’s department said deputies found a car engulfed in flames when they responded to a report of a collision in the community of Valencia. Two people found in the car were pronounced dead at the scene.

Obit Paul Walker

Walker was born in Glendale, one of the largest LA suburbs, to a fashion model mother and a sewer contractor. He leaves 15-year daughter – Meadow.  He started acting as a child, in commercials and TV series, but his greatest success was playing Brian O’Conner in Fast and Furious. He was filming the seventh movie when he tragically lost his life. Among his upcoming features awaiting release are Relativity Media’s “Brick Mansions” and “Vehicle 19.” “Hours,” a drama set in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, is due out Dec. 13 from Lionsgate’s Pantelion Films.

The new Nissan Qashqai

Nissan-Qashqai-2014-teaserThe brand-new Nissan Qashqai 2014 has been fully revealed, along with price details and specifications for the new car. The Nissan Qashqai 2014 price will start from £17,595 ($28.700) and go up to £27,845 ($45440) – that makes the new Qashqai a bit more expensive than it was before. However the new model not only gets a fresh new look, it also adds extra technology, space and even more performance than it did previously. The bravest claim is that the 2014 Qashqai will be the “world’s most parkable car”

This is maybe true because the new Qashqai will be available with Park Assist, which works with Nissan’s ever Around View Monitor. Automatically measuring the size of an available parallel parking space, Park Assist takes care of steering into the space with the driver controlling the accelerator and brake. The advanced parking system requires a space which is just 80cm longer than the length of the Qashqai to be able to automatically steer the car neatly into position, saving time and avoiding damage to wheels, tires and bodywork. The system can also assist in bay parking, with the driver benefiting from the ‘helicopter view’ provided by the Around View Monitor (AVM) to guide them through the process. Once the system has detected the white lines of an empty bay (required for the system to operate), it will automatically park inside them. Around View Monitor uses cameras mounted on the tailgate, front grille and beneath each door mirror complete a 360 degree picture. Images from the camera are displayed on the new, larger seven-inch NissanConnect screen.

2014-Nissan-Qashqai-interiorThe Park Assist is not the only reason to choose the new Qashqai. The 1.2 petrol turbocharged engine is good for 50mpg and the 1.5 turbo diesel 74mpg. If you go for the 1.6DCi, you’ll get four-wheel drive and the option of an automatic. Sadly, they’ve dropped the seven-seater. And the Qashqai is a car for all seasons and reasons.

As well as the usual Nissan reliability, it carries five adults and all their luggage, doubles up as an SUV when the going gets tough, yet drives like a car.

There’s even a new chassis control system derived from the quick Nissan GTR that gives the function of a limited slip diff but smooth ride quality too.

The Qashqai is a remarkable package that revolutionized a market.

Ford puts Coca Cola technology in cars

for enrgiAll car makers are putting efforts in making vehicles more environmental friendly these days. Hybrid engines and better gas mileage is what most of them focus on. A new partnership between Coca Cola and Ford shows there are other aspects that can be improved. The PlantBotle technology will be used in the interior of the new Ford Fusion Energi – a hybrid vehicle currently in development by the car company. A demonstration model outfitted with the first-ever fabric covering for seat cushions, head restraints and more made with Coke’s PlantBottle Technology will be showcased next week at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

plantbotle“We hope to drive awareness that PlantBottle Technology can be used across the entire polyester universe – in everything from the inside of a car, to carpet, to clothing,” said Scott Vitters, general manager of the PlantBottle packaging platform at Coca-Cola “Ford is highlighting the potential for a future of renewably sourced, low-carbon polyester fibers that can be recycled again and again.”

Scientists and engineers at the two companies co-developed a fiber using PlantBottle material that could be woven into durable, automotive-grade PET fabric. Ford is evaluating the potential of using the material in other applications. The PlantBotle technology essentially uses biofuels, in this case sugar cane ethanol, to create a modified PET, which is a type of plastic resin used commonly for bottles. Coca-Cola said that it’s already distributed over 18 billion PlantBottle packages, which has saved them 400,000 barrels of oil. If the new fabric will be used in the majority of U.S. Ford models, it would save a further 6,000 barrels of oil.

The Fusion Energi – Ford’s most fuel-efficient sedan – was the natural choice for a test vehicle, given its “eco-friendly halo.” Other renewable materials are featured throughout the vehicle, from carpet liner made from sound-absorbing denim, to seat-cushion foam made with soybeans. “People who buy a hybrid plug-in vehicle are more environmentally conscious than the average car buyer,” said John Viera, global director of sustainability and vehicle environmental matters, Ford Motor Company “And they’re interested in more than great fuel economy.”

A James Bond level of security

The world of the wealthy and powerful is also a world of danger. We already wrote about some celebrities and their armored vehicles. But it’s not just the celebrities – a lot of professionals in the finance industry, or mining and oil and a good number of politicians are seeking for the best protection that modern technology could offer. And what they get is pretty close to what we are used to see only in James Bond movies.

The most recent form a protection is a stylish armored suit. It comes from the Canadian tailoring company Garrison Bespoke and the price will be approximately Can$20,000.

Canada Bulletproof Suit“The tailoring industry is actually quite sleepy, and you want to be challenged like this.” said David Tran, head of special projects for the company. He also explained how they got the idea from a story one of their costumers told them. The man got shot in a foreign country and shared his experience with his tailors and inspired them for their new project. “After five minutes, we thought, ‘Are we really serious here?’ And then we started looking into it,” said Tran.

Their creation won’t make look like you are going on war but can stop bullets and knife attacks. Once a suit has been custom-tailored, six thin nanotube sheets are slipped into the lining of the back of the suit jacket and in the front of the vest, allowing the fit to remain crisp and clean. Although more sheets can be added for extra protection, comfort and ease of movement would be compromised. Garrison Bespoke already have at least six requests and there is a waiting list for the armored suit.

armored carAnother, more conventional method of protection – armored cars – is getting more and more popular. The biggest company in this sector – Texas Armoring – shows an unprecedented sales boom. They armor about 200 vehicles per year. In the next five years, the company’s CEO, Trent Kimbell, expects that number to double. The protection Texas Armoring offers ranges from being fortified against handguns all the way up to repelling an AK-47 and M-16. The company also offers „James Bond-type accessories.” These include smoke screens and electrified door handles.
