New details on Tesla’s upcoming Model X revealed in London

modelx2Tesla’s presence on stock market and auto market has been extraordinary this year. Last two months, though, the company lost some of its reputation due to the third quarter disappointing results. For the past few years the Model S has been the main focus of Tesla Motors. Recent Model S fires in Seattle, Mexico and Tennessee harmed the good face of the company.  Now it is time for a new star to join the Tesla family – the luxury SUV Model X.  At a store opening in London, Tesla CEO Elon Musk revealed some details about the new car:

„The Model X price will be very similar to the Model S. It’s probably going to be a slightly higher starting price because the Model X will only be offered as all-wheel-drive. So it’ll be dual-motor all-wheel drive.”

The „all-wheel drive” comes as surprise. Tesla’s website claims the car will be offered both with rear wheel drive and four wheel drive. But the statement was made in London, so maybe it’s only for the British costumers. The other interesting is that we have some information about the price tag. But „slightly higher” doesn’t really tell us much. If it’s similar to the Model S we can expect it to be anywhere from about $60,000 to more than $100,000 depending on options and the type of battery used, not including federal tax credits.

modelx1Originally Musk had planned to begin producing the vehicle by the end of this year with deliveries beginning early in 2014. In February that schedule was extended for production to begin by the end of 2014 so that the company could focus on achieving profitability in 2013. The first drives, and customer deliveries scheduled for the second quarter of 2014, but the full capacity production is expected in 2015. For now, though, the new vehicle is still having its final production specifications and the most commented thing about it seems to be the gull-wing doors.

Third Tesla Model S on fire in five weeks

After the incidents in Seattle and Mexico, a third Model S has caught fire under similar conditions. The fire is said to have started as a result of an accident and was not a spontaneous event. The driver struck a tow hitch in the middle of a lane on Interstate 24 near Murfreesboro, Tennessee, damaging the car’s undercarriage and causing the fire, Dalya Qualls, a Tennessee Highway Patrol spokeswoman, said, the driver pulled the car over and was uninjured. The highway patrol report did not say how fast the 2013 model Tesla Model S was traveling in Tennessee, but the driver was able to pull off the roadway and get out of the car.

The recent fires are reflecting bad on the California based company. Its shares slid 7.5 percent to $139.77 at the close yesterday in New York after reports of the newest fire. That decline follows a 15 percent drop Nov. 6 after the carmaker’s third-quarter results and fourth-quarter outlook disappointed investors. While there are an average of 150,000 car fires in the U.S. each year, with only 19,000 Model S sedans on the road, having three vehicles catch fire in six weeks has garnered plenty of attention. The Seattle one was not investigated. The Mexico one involved a drunken driver who went through a wall and crashed into a tree. A third fire in five weeks suggests U.S. regulators need to examine the luxury electric car, a safety advocate said after the Tennessee accident. According to a statement from the NHTSA regarding the fire in Tennessee, the agency “will contact the local authorities who are looking into the incident to determine if there are vehicle safety implications that merit agency action.”

Earlier this year Independent testing by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has awarded the Tesla Model S a 5-star safety rating, not just overall, but in every subcategory without exception. But the recent fires raised some serious questions about model’s safety.

Mercedes-Benz with record sales for October

mercedes emblemThe October sales for Mercedes-Benz rose with 15.3 percent, setting a new record for. In a statement the company said sales increased in every region with growth driven primarily by the United States where deliveries jumped 25 percent and Turkey, where shipment of cars rose 63 percent. With results like this, the last quarter of 2013 promises to be good for the brand. The plan has been to grow overall sales for 2013, and with all these monthly records, Mercedes-Benz should be well on its way to achieving that goal. Increasing sales in key regions is definitely a part of that agenda, and that’s something that the company was able to achieve in October. The only dent in the report is that smart sales continue to tumble, with a 3.5 per cent decline in October and a 6.3 per cent decline in year-to-date numbers. German sales also dropped 2.2 per cent for the month.

Is Boeing 747 history?

The iconic jumbo jet might soon be just part of the history of airplanes. Not a single one has boon sold this year and Boeing has already cut its production twice. Most airlines simply don’t want planes anymore – they burn too much fuel and there simply are not enough passengers to fill them. Airlines now fly smaller planes several times a day instead. And new technologies allow jet with just two engines to fly the same distance with less fuel.

Boeing_747-8_N747EX_First_Flight

The 747 once stood alone, with more seats than any other jet and a range of 6,000 miles, longer than any other plane. Before this plane International travel was mostly limited to those who could afford the pricy flights. The 747 changed that. The first 747s could seat twice as many passengers as the preferred international jet of the time, the Boeing 707. That made tickets twice cheaper and a vacation on the other cost of the Atlantic was not saved just for the wealthy anymore. Nowadays there are a lot more affordable flights to choose from. And the majority travelers want more than one flight to choose from.

This does not mean that the Boeing 747 will be soon in the past. Boeing says it’s committed to the 747, and sees a market for it in regions like Asia.  Marketing chief Randy Tinseth says the economic downturn of the past five years has hurt 747 sales. Still, he says, “We think that market will come around.” Even if it doesn’t, 747 fans can take heart. Most planes last three decades or more, so there will be some 747s in the skies for a long time.

2014 BMW i3 – the dawn of a new age

The goal of „project i” was to position BMW for the future by thinking of “sustainable mobility concepts. Ulrich Kranz, the executive who cares of the project, calls the new i3 „the dawn of a new age of electromobility”. Is he right?

2014-bmw-i3_100443670_m

The usual statistics – a high-torque 170bhp motor and a power flow uninterrupted by gearchanges, it’s at 62mph in 7.2 seconds. It can get more than 80 miles per charge, and can recharge in six hours.

At its core, the i3 is a city-dweller’s car. BMW rode 32 million miles with megacity drivers, and they determined that the ideal urban pod dweller drives an average of about 35 miles a day. The majority of the world’s drivers spend the majority of their time driving in cities. “It’s not an aggressive way of driving,” a BMW executive told me, “but cooler driving. Drivers can have a calmer, more relaxing driving style.” In addition BMW designed it to be an extension of a modern digital reality. The i3 comes equipped with a suite of apps that actually work. It has a center-console screen with a somewhat above-average GPS, but it’s not a crummy iPad knockoff like the ones seen in so many contemporary cars.

The BMW i3 is a car for upper-middle class people who either claimed to, or strived for, “sustainable lifestyles.” A vehicle that gives you the feeling you drive the latest technology and get the most of it.

Hybrid car safety conference

There are more and more hybrid and electrical cars out on the road. The technology doesn’t even count as something new anymore. Yet it is still questionable whether first responders, like firefighters and paramedics are ready to deal with accidents involving hybrids. A conference in Paducah will try to answer most of the questions.

Volkswagen reaches for the future

vwxl11 This is the Volkswagen XL1. It comes as a result of 15 years long effort of the company to build a 235 MPG car (i.e. a vehicle that can burn just one liter of fuel to travel 100 kilometers, or 62.1 miles). To me, it looks like an alien car. And I really, really want to try it out on the road. As I may not have the chance to do so soon, I went through all the reviews I could find online and the result was not what I expected. I still want to try it, but now it would take a miracle to make me buy it. But let’s go to the facts I gathered.

The XL1’s efficiency is already legendary: in windless conditions it needs just 8bhp to maintain a steady 62mph (100km/h) and it can return up to 313mpg (133km/l). And yet if you were to deploy all available power it would hit 125mph (200km/h), although for now it’s governed at 100mph (160km/h). The twin forces which shaped this car are weight and aerodynamics. Everything possible has been done to optimize these two and some of the things they did just made me laugh – It doesn’t have electric windows, for instance, as hand winders weigh less. Really? There are no wing mirrors as these create drag. Instead, tiny rear-facing cameras transmit an image on to a screen on the door panels – now that’s a good, futuristic idea. But why would they put the screens on the door panels? It’s not like there is something in the mirror’s place. The car has fared-in wheels, skinny tires and an entirely flat bottom.

vwxl12

Inside, the XL1 looks remarkably normal. The car is so radical and challenging, the team said, that they wanted the interior to be familiar, calm and uncluttered. Much of the kit is the same as you’d find in a Golf. And if I wanted to drive a Golf, I would buy a Golf. If the car looks alien, make it alien all the way.

All the things I read about this car made me realize something. Volkswagen didn’t build it to make an efficient and clean car. They did it because they could.

Under note: Electrical means clean? Where do you think electricity comes from?

What high-tech auto gadgets are already a must

Self-driving cars may not be on the roads yet, but there are plenty of innovations that are not longer considered a luxury. Your next car will still need a driver behind the wheel, but it will be able to do a lot more on its own. Self adjusting headlights and an engine that “knows” how to save fuel – these are not reserved for high-class vehicles and experimental hybrids anymore.

And here’s a list of the feature that are becoming more and more popular every year.

Dutch team won The World Solar Challenge in Australia

The World Solar Challenge was born in 1982 when Hans Tholstrup and Larry Perkins decided to go from the west end of Australia to the east in a home-built solar car – Te Quiet Achiever. Now the race is held every two years and aims to inspire people to explore energy efficient vehicles and to make them more popular.

This year the race was won by the Dutch team NUON from the Delft University of Technology.  Its solar-powered Nuna 7 vehicle arrived in Adelaide at 10:03 a.m. on the morning of the fifth day of the event, having led from the front for the full 3,021 km from Darwin, crossing Australia from north coast to south in a total of a little over 33 hours. That puts its average speed at an impressive 91 km/h (57 mph). Nuon Solar Team’s overall time was a little behind its 2005 pace, when it completed the trip in 29 hours and 11 minutes achieving an average speed of 102.8 km/h (63.9 mph).
