Hovering cars- will we need roads in the future?

800px-Toyota_FT-86_II_(5488848006)Toyota, one of the largest automakers, seems not to be content with just building conventional cars, hybrids or even testing self-driving cars. They are moving ahead by developing vehicles that are capable of hovering above the road, company officials revealed last Monday.

Hiroyoshi Yoshiki, the managing officer in Toyota Motor Corporation, said in an interview in San Francisco that the Japanese car manufacturer has investigated the possibility of vehicles hovering over the road. He added that the cars will not be actually flying like a helicopter in three-dimension space; instead, they will be “a little bit away” from the road with the aim of reducing friction with the road and they will be similar to a hovercraft.

However, Yoshiki didn’t give further details about when the company began investigating the idea; how far along they are into their research or whether they plan to put such a vehicle on the market.

Flying vehicles have captured people’s imaginations for decades. It’s good that at least some companies are exploring the idea. The technology for bringing these cars to reality might not be as far off as we think.
